Systems approach to health longevity

Our latest medical science reveals that the human body, instead of being a set of independent organs as chronicled by ancestor scholars of modern medicine, is actually one whole integrated system comprising of a vast, interconnected and interdependent weblike network.

Just like in Ayurveda, Traditional chinese medicine and other medical practices of many ancient cultures embracing the systems approach to healing, we have come full circle, as we now have the science to prove it.

Generally, symptoms and illnesses are given separate diagnoses and are treated accordingly – separately. However, from the lens of integrative and functional medicine, many chronic diseases our society suffers with develop due to overlooked and marginalised chronic inflammation (caused by a multitude of lifestyle related factors) yet manifests differently. Thus, the same root cause can result in multiple symptoms and health conditions, and it is now clear that when we address the cause, we are able to start the trajectory towards healing.

We now also have evidence that the majority of today’s chronic conditions are treatable through appropriate nutrition and lifestyle approaches, available to us all. Healthy longevity is therefore a skillset that can be developed by understanding our health from the systems perspective and then taking ownership of our own health and wellbeing with practical self-help tools, movement, and complementary therapy interventions.

Longevity, a natural consequence of balancing our bodily systems

Healthy Longevity means the ability to continue engaging in life at full capacity with vitality as we age.

Our body comprises 12 complete systems, however, the proper function of 7 dynamically interconnected systems is vital for our intents and purposes: Endocrine (hormonal-body chemistry) system, Digestive system, Metabolic system (energy and mitochondria), Immune system, Lymphatic system (detoxification), Musculoskeletal system and Central Nervous System.

When these are in balance, health and longevity are the natural consequence; but when the balance is disrupted, disease and aging may occur. In fact, systems imbalances have been highlighted to be the underlying factors of all diseases; yet these are correctable – akin to corrupted software code that throws us out of synch, preventing our body to communicate effectively, slowing our repair and healing.

Understanding this interconnectedness is therefore key, so we can take charge and focus on creating that balance to reach our best health, vitality and longevity.
